Nestled against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado is not just a revered institution of military training but also a burgeoning hub for healthcare professionals, especially nurses. As a local resident and nursing professional, I can attest to the unique blend of opportunities that this city offers. The atmosphere here is invigorating, with breathtaking views and a vibrant community marked by a spirit of service and camaraderie. The average salary for nurses in the Academy area ranges between $32.55 to $45.14 per hour, translating to an annual salary between $67,700 and $94,000, which is quite competitive compared to the state mean of $37.65 per hour and the national mean of $39.60. This is a great place for nurses who are passionate about caring for those who serve our country, and as travelers know, the appeal of the Academy is crowned by its excellent recreation options and strong local culture.
Sometimes smaller communities offer the best nursing experience. Usaf Academy proved that to me.
The nursing job market here is thriving, with a notable increase in demand projected over the next few years. The state has around 54,000 registered nurses, and considering the Academy's population of approximately 1,600, we estimate that there are currently around 450 nurses working within our community. Looking ahead, projections indicate that we will require an additional 15 percent of nursing staff over the next five years, particularly in critical care and surgical settings. Interestingly, the demand for travel nurses is shaped by seasonal peaks, primarily during the summer months when the Academy hosts various training camps. Meanwhile, per diem nursing opportunities are becoming increasingly popular, with several local clinics and hospitals offering short-term shifts that provide flexibility for nurses looking for additional income. In comparison, nearby cities such as Colorado Springs offer a booming market with similar dynamics, but with larger healthcare facilities like Penrose-St. Francis Health Services employing many more nurses than we do here at the Academy.
Our healthcare infrastructure is robust, with the Academy's own medical service as well as several clinics in nearby Colorado Springs, including Memorial Hospital and UCHealth. There is a growing emphasis on investments in mental health services, which is reflected in the expansion of community health programs that can directly influence nursing roles. Being a part of this close-knit community, we actively engage in events like the Pikes Peak Marathon and the annual Air Force Academy football games, which underscores the pride we have in our service members and our dedication to their health. With the city's population projected to grow steadily, there will be ample opportunity for nurses interested in developing their expertise. I invite all my fellow nursing professionals, whether local or coming from afar, to explore the opportunities present here in the Academy by signing up with NurseRecruiter for job matches and listings.
