JOB SUMMARY: RN – MEDSURG/TELE

- FACILITY INFORMATION:
- Academic medical center and teaching hospital with 885 licensed beds
- Level 1 Trauma, Chest Pain, and Stroke Center

- UNIT DETAILS:
- 29-bed MedSurg/Telemetry unit
- Patient population includes general medicine (diabetes, GI, respiratory, renal, wounds, chest tubes, trachs)
- Common tasks: wound care, dressing changes, lab draws

- EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum 2 years MedSurg/Tele experience required
- First-time travelers accepted based on strength of background

- PATIENT RATIOS:
- RN: 1:5-6 patients
- CNA: 1:9-10 patients

- LICENSURE & CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- BLS, ACLS, NIHSS (Resource Team only)

- SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Direct/indirect patient care, telemetry strip interpretation
- Proficiency with chest tubes, trachs, PIV starts, drains/tubes, PCA pumps
- Gtt management (Amiodarone, Fentanyl PCA, Ketamine PCA, Dilaudid PCA, Heparin)
- Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills

- SUPPORT ON UNIT:
- CNA, receptionist/HUC, charge nurse support
- Shared phlebotomy duties
- Rapid Response Team, 24/7 RT, hospitalist, and intensivist coverage
- Centralized telemetry monitoring

- TECHNOLOGY/EQUIPMENT USED:
- EMR: Epic
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Medication dispensing: Omnicell

- FLOATING:
- May float to other MedSurg units as needed

- ORIENTATION:
- New Employee Orientation (NEO) and 2 days departmental orientation

- SCHEDULING:
- 12-hour shifts (0630-1900 or 1830-0630)
- Every-other weekend rotation
- No on-call required
- 75% holiday coverage expectation for travelers
- 6-week scheduling cycle
- RTO requires manager approval
