This position supports the Indian Health Service (IHS) mission of delivering essential pediatric care to Native American communities across the Navajo Nation. You will play a vital role in improving access to quality healthcare for children and families in an underserved community.
Position Overview
The Pediatric Outpatient RN provides clinical care to pediatric patients ages 0–18 in an outpatient setting. Responsibilities include patient assessments, immunizations, medication administration, screenings, and caregiver education. The RN may float to other units within the Shiprock Service Unit as needed.
Core Responsibilities
Perform patient intake, triage, and pediatric assessments
Obtain vital signs, conduct developmental screenings, and complete physical assessments
Administer vaccines, medications, and provide basic life support
Assist with procedures such as blood draws and laboratory testing
Develop and support care plans for acute and chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, ADHD)
Educate patients and caregivers on nutrition, safety, and medication management
Coordinate care with pediatricians and interdisciplinary teams
Maintain accurate EHR documentation and support efficient patient flow
Key Personnel Qualifications (Mandatory)
Experience
Minimum 24 months of RN experience
Minimum 2 years of pediatric experience (required)
Licensure
Active, unrestricted RN license in any U.S. state or territory
Certifications
BLS, ACLS, and PALS (AHA required)
Clinical Competencies
Pediatric medication administration
Immunizations and vaccine protocols
IV therapy and venipuncture
Patient assessment and triage
Infection control and PPE compliance
Outpatient documentation workflows
Health & Immunization Requirements
MMR
Hepatitis B (series, titer, or declination)
Varicella (history, vaccine, or titer)
Current Tdap
TB screening within the past 12 months
Seasonal influenza vaccination (October–March)
Additional Requirements
Successful federal background check (eQIP and fingerprinting)
English proficiency and cultural sensitivity to Native communities
Basic computer and EHR skills
Completion of all required IHS orientation and training
Work Environment
Pediatric outpatient clinic with potential float support across Shiprock Service Unit facilities
Performance evaluated based on patient care quality, documentation, compliance, and professionalism
