A Medical-Surgical Nurse provides comprehensive care to adult patients before and after surgery, managing medical needs, monitoring health, and coordinating with healthcare teams.
Key Responsibilities
Medical-Surgical Nurses, or Med-Surg RNs, are responsible for direct patient care in hospital, clinic, or outpatient settings. Their duties include:
Patient Assessment and Monitoring: Evaluate patient conditions, monitor vital signs, and recognize acute changes or deteriorations to implement appropriate interventions
Medication Administration: Prepare, administer, and document prescribed medications, including IV therapy, and adjust medical equipment as needed
Pre- and Post-Surgical Care: Assist patients before and after surgical procedures, including wound care, dressing changes, catheter insertion, and patient education on recovery
Care Coordination: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including physicians, pharmacists, therapists, and social workers, to develop and implement individualized care plans
Patient Education: Provide guidance to patients and families regarding treatment plans, post-operative care, and health management
Documentation: Maintain accurate patient records, report changes in condition, and follow physician orders and protocols
Advocacy and Support: Act as a patient advocate, assisting with activities of daily living, encouraging mobility, and providing emotional support
