Registered Nurse PCU

The Progressive Care Unit RN, assumes the responsibility and accountability for delivering patient care to telemetry/progressive care patients. The Progressive Care Unit RN demonstrates the ability to make clinical judgments in an effective and efficient manner with supervision. This individual employs critical thinking and performance ability in the coordination of patient care, consistently performs according to nursing standards, and is accountable in managing patient care and assisting others in the management of patient care. The Progressive Care Unit RN is sometimes also called a step-down nurse, cardiac stepdown, neuro stepdown, surgical stepdown and in some medical centers, the PCU is also known as a transition or intermediate unit.

Credentials Required:

2 years of Progressive level of care nursing experience or Critical Care nursing experience
Primary continuous bedside monitoring (ECG, SpO2, BP, RR)
Cardiology specialty experience
Cardiac surgery specialty experience
ACLS certified
Continuous invasive pressure monitoring (Arterial Line, CVP monitoring)
Temporary pacing (transvenous pacing, epicardial wire pacing)
Vasopressor infusion management (phenylephrine, norepinephrine)
Inotrope infusion management (milrinone, dobutamine)
Chest tube management
Phlebotomy
Peripheral IV insertion


Credentials Preferred:

2 years of Critical care experience highly preferred (does not have to be cardiac ICU specific)
Charge RN experience
RN precepting experience
