Job Summary
The Pediatric Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) Registered Nurse delivers high-quality, patient-centered care to pediatric patients undergoing cardiovascular surgical procedures. This role requires specialized clinical expertise and a deep understanding of the unique needs of pediatric cardiac patients. The RN collaborates closely with pediatric cardiovascular surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and the broader perioperative team to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care throughout the surgical continuum. Utilizing established nursing frameworks such as “Assess, Perform, Teach, and Manage,” the RN provides individualized care that supports optimal surgical outcomes. The RN advocates for the safety and well-being of patients and their families, ensuring that care is developmentally appropriate and emotionally supportive. This role also upholds the organization’s mission, vision, and values by fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, and continuous improvement in the pediatric CVOR environment.
• Self/preferential scheduling posted four weeks in advance for you to have predictability in your schedule Culture of mutual respect and collaboration among all surgical staff
• Continuous investment in equipment including surgical instruments, devices and patient positioning for you to do your best work with patient safety and workflow efficiency in the Operating Room
• Rounding with unit leaders, including charge nurses, to ensure your voice is heard on suggestions for patient care and surgical workflow improvement
• On-call is required during select non-business hours
Job Duties
• You will evaluate patients prior to surgery
• You will provide patient and family education surrounding the procedure and peri-operative process
• You will assume responsibility for patient preparation, including intravenous therapy, preoperative medications, and surgical site verification
• You will participate in surgical site verification, including briefing, time out, debriefing, and universal protocols, according to hospital policy
• You will recognize and respond to patient emergencies
• You will deliver high-quality, patient-centered care while managing evidence-based practices and continuous improvement initiatives
• You will be an integral member of a dynamic interdisciplinary team – consisting of the provider(s), surgeons, surgical technologists and more
• You will consistently apply the nursing process, critical thinking skills, scientific judgment, technical skills and leadership to independently deliver safe nursing care to patients
• You will assess patient condition, monitor throughout your shift, and document changes in patient condition along with the care provided thoroughly
• You will educate patients and families/caregivers about the patient’s medical condition, treatment and follow-up measures
Qualifications
• Basic Cardiac Life Support required
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 60 days
• PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support must be obtained within 60 days
• (RN) Registered Nurse
• Associate Degree; BSN required w/6 month enrollment and 24 month completion (Magnet Hospital)
• 1+ year of recent applicable experience in an acute care setting required
• Must have experience with patients coming out of Heart Surgery
• NICU, Mother Baby, PEDS, PICU experience is a plus
• Candidates with Children's Hospital experience preferred
