An ICU RN provides specialized, critical care to patients with life-threatening conditions, requiring advanced clinical skills, constant monitoring, and collaboration with healthcare teams.
Key Responsibilities
ICU RNs are responsible for caring for critically ill patients who often cannot manage their own care. Their duties include:
Performing head-to-toe assessments and monitoring vital signs continuously to detect changes in patient condition
Administering medications, IV therapy, and managing mechanical ventilation
Responding to medical emergencies and providing life-saving interventions
Operating and troubleshooting advanced medical equipment such as ventilators, cardiac monitors, and infusion pumps
Assisting with diagnostic procedures, wound care, and discharge planning
Maintaining accurate patient records and ensuring infection control protocols are followed
Providing pain management, psychosocial support, and patient/family education
Collaborating with physicians, specialists, and other healthcare professionals to implement treatment plan
CERTS: ACLS and BLS certs
