Role Overview
PCU/Stepdown nurses work in a step-down phase of hospital care, where patients are moved from ICU or other critical units for continued monitoring before transfer to lower-acuity areas or discharge Indeed. These units handle complex medical cases such as cardiac, respiratory, post-surgical, and multi-system illness, requiring advanced assessment, rapid response, and coordination with interdisciplinary teams
Key Responsibilities
Continuous patient monitoring: Assess and evaluate patients for signs of recovery or deterioration, using telemetry and other advanced equipment
Medication administration: Administer prescribed medications, IV therapies, blood products, and other treatments as directed
Procedural skills: Change dressings, insert IVs and catheters, perform bedside procedures, and maintain medical equipment readiness
