Great Expectations

Working as a nurse home visitor is much different than hospital or clinical nursing. Our nurses get to work one on one with families during their pregnancy and then for two years after they have their babies. This allows the nurses to support the client during this critical time in their and their babies’ lives. It also allows nurses to really spend quality time with their families. Instead of having six to twenty patients in your care a day each nurse sees about twelve clients a week. This means that they see about three families a day. Instead of rushing from patient to patient and dealing with the seemingly endless charting, our nurses spend an hour to an hour and a half with each family and have some documentation to complete related to that visit. Our nurses also receive intensive training and support. Each nurse receives two months of training prior to seeing families independently, attends weekly meetings with all of the nursing staff, and has time one on one with the nursing supervisor to debrief on their week.
