CODAC’s mission statement is perhaps the best introduction to our organization. Its words embody our longstanding commitment to service and our pledge to: Provide the highest standard of care, comprehensive resources, and compassionate services for the prevention and treatment of, and recovery from, the impact of substance abuse and other related behaviors. Since 1971, CODAC has provided quality addiction and behavioral healthcare services to persons with substance abuse and/or substance abuse-related problems, as well as to those with behavioral health and anger management issues. Rhode Island’s substance abusing population represents a wide cross section of age, gender, ethnic, social, and economic demographics. In order to serve this diverse population effectively, we believe CODAC must offer a varied, multifaceted array of services that are appropriate, accessible, and responsive to individual needs. Our goal is to present each patient with the opportunity to explore and develop behavioral and lifestyle options that will result in a healthier, more productive life—for both the patient and his/her loved ones. CODAC’s goal is to become an active partner in both treatment and recovery, providing ongoing services and outside referrals, as indicated, to help patients create a strong, effective support system for successful long-term recovery. CODAC strongly believes that community awareness, education, and engagement are critical components in substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery. We are proud of our long history of working to bring effective resources to cities and towns throughout RI. Community outreach is intended not only to provide information, but to place the dynamics of substance abuse in a broader perspective. Because the factors that lead to substance abuse are complex, we try to convey the importance of understanding both motivation and context—working to help others look at the issue not only from the user’s point of view, but also that of families and significant others. CODAC is committed to educating, engaging, and strengthening families and other support systems that are key elements of the recovery infrastructure. One of CODAC’s most important guiding principles is our commitment to treating patients as individuals, in a non-judgmental, non-moralistic and objective manner, and to refrain from imposing our own personal value system or perspective on a patient’s lifestyle and behavioral choices.
