A practical nursing programme takes roughly twelve months and leads to the licensed practical nurse credential — licensed vocational nurse in California and Texas. It is the fastest route to a nursing licence in the United States.
Programmes run at community and technical colleges, vocational schools, and a shrinking number of hospitals. Federal data classifies the credential as a postsecondary non-degree award, though some programmes attach an associate degree.
What the year contains
Anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing, maternal and child health, mental health, gerontology, and nutrition, alongside clinical rotations — commonly in long-term care, medical-surgical units, and clinics.

What the licence allows, and where
The practical nurse gathers data, contributes to the plan of care, and carries out care within it. The nursing assessment, the nursing diagnosis, and the plan itself belong to the registered nurse in most states.
Which specific procedures follow from that varies more between states than almost anything else in nursing law. Intravenous push medications, blood products, central line care, and independent wound assessment are permitted in some states, permitted only after a board-recognized course in others, and prohibited elsewhere. Several states run a separate intravenous therapy certification a practical nurse must hold before hanging any infusion.

Where the jobs are
The tier's centre of gravity is outside the hospital. About 37 percent of practical nurses work in nursing and residential care facilities, 16 percent in hospitals, 12 percent in home healthcare, and 11 percent in physicians' offices.
The median wage was about $64,400 in 2025, with employment projected to grow around 3 percent through 2035. Acute care hospitals moved toward all-registered-nurse staffing from the 1980s onward, so a student expecting to work on a hospital medical-surgical floor should check local hiring rather than assume it.

Why people choose it
Time and money. A year rather than two to four, at a fraction of the cost, with earnings starting sooner.
A licence while deciding. Many students use it to find out whether nursing suits them before committing to a longer programme.
A route that fits around work. Evening and part-time formats are common, and the shorter commitment is easier to combine with a job and a family.

Before enrolling
Two checks matter more than any ranking.
Board approval and accreditation. Approval by the state board is what makes graduates eligible to sit the examination. Accreditation is separate and voluntary, and its absence can block later transfer into a registered nursing programme — which is the most common way this decision goes wrong. Published pass rate. Boards publish first-time examination pass rates by school. A programme well below the state average is telling you something.
For-profit practical nursing programmes vary widely in cost and outcomes, and the price difference against a community college programme is frequently several times over for the same licence.
