Skilled nursing facility (also referred to as nursing homes) nurses, primarily work with the aging population. Some patients also come to these facilities to have short-term rehabilitation after a knee surgery or hip replacement as well. Nurses must stringently track the patient's progress through the nursing facility in order to extract reimbursement from the insurance company. An interdisciplinary team including nursing, physical and occupational rehabilitation therapists and a case manager follows the patient throughout their stay at the skilled nursing facility. Longer stay patients (or residents) may also need the "skilled" part of nursing care for a time in the facility, but also will be staying after rehabilitation is complete. These patient/residents become well known to the staff and many nurses find this area of nursing rewarding, as they know the patient, their lives and their families well. Patient assessments in this setting are faster and easier than hospital nursing as nurses know a patient's habits and behavior, and subtle changes are detected immediately.
