Role Overview
The Substance Abuse Counselor supports patients undergoing treatment for opioid dependence through counseling, care planning, and participation in a Harm Reduction and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program. This role involves working closely with a high-risk, underserved patient population to support recovery and long-term wellness.
Key Responsibilities
Provide individual counseling and support to patients in recovery
Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment plans
Support patients in a Harm Reduction and MAT-based treatment model
Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
Collaborate with medical and clinical teams for coordinated care
Assist patients in overcoming behavioral and social barriers to recovery
Manage a caseload, increasing gradually during onboarding
Required Qualifications
Level 3 (SAC 3)
Must hold ADC-T (Temporary Permit)
No degree required initially
Must obtain a Bachelor’s degree and required certification within 5 years
Level 5 (SAC 5)
Must hold one of the following active licenses:
LPC, LADC, LSW, LPCC, or LMFT
No Master’s degree required (depending on license eligibility criteria)
Level 6 (SAC 6)
Meets Level 5 requirements
Holds a Master’s degree
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in substance abuse counseling or behavioral health
Familiarity with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Understanding of Harm Reduction principles
Experience working with high-risk or underserved populations
Skills & Competencies
Strong interpersonal and counseling skills
Compassionate and patient-focused approach
Ability to maintain professional boundaries
Strong documentation and organizational skills
Comfortable using EMR systems and tools like Microsoft Office
