Role Overview for the Director of Nursing
Hospitality Health ER is seeking an experienced Director of Nursing (DON) to lead nursing operations within a freestanding emergency department environment.
This role requires prior Emergency Department leadership experience. Candidates without ER or ED leadership background will not be considered.
The Director of Nursing is responsible for the day-to-day clinical and operational leadership of the emergency department, ensuring safe, efficient, compliant, and high-quality patient care in a 24/7 setting. This is a highly visible role that requires strong clinical judgment, operational discipline, and the ability to lead in real time.
This is not a desk-only position. The DON is expected to maintain an active presence within the department and partner closely with physicians and staff.
Ideal candidates will have leadership experience in one or more of the following environments: Emergency Department (ED), Emergency Room (ER), Freestanding Emergency Room (FSER), Trauma, or high-acuity emergency services. We are seeking a visible nurse leader with strong operational and clinical leadership experience.
Key Responsibilities for the Director of Nursing
Emergency Department Operations
Lead and oversee all nursing operations within a freestanding emergency department
Ensure appropriate staffing, scheduling, coverage, and skill mix for a 24/7 ER environment
Maintain readiness for high-acuity, high-volume patient care
Partner with leadership to manage productivity, FTEs, and departmental budgets
Oversee inventory, pharmacy coordination, equipment readiness, and facility functionality
Clinical Leadership & Staff Management
Provide direct leadership to clinical and non-clinical team members
Participate in hiring decisions, onboarding, performance management, and corrective action
Maintain visibility and accessibility to staff across shifts
Coach, mentor, and develop nursing leaders and frontline staff
Recognize performance and address issues promptly and professionally
Compliance, Quality & Physician Collaboration
Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory and licensing requirements (including TDSHS)
Review and maintain clinical policies, procedures, and standards of care
Collaborate closely with emergency physicians and medical leadership
Respond promptly to physician concerns and operational issues
Support quality initiatives, patient flow, and patient satisfaction efforts
Strategic & Financial Oversight
Manage departmental budgets and monitor revenue, expenses, and contribution margins
Identify capital needs and participate in planning and justification
Stay current on emergency nursing best practices and implement improvements as appropriate
Required Qualifications for the Director of Nursing
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (BSN preferred)
Active RN license in the State of Texas
Demonstrated leadership experience in an Emergency Department setting
Minimum of five (5) years of progressive clinical experience, with ER leadership experience strongly preferred
Strong operational, communication, and decision-making skills
Ability to lead confidently in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
Professional certification in emergency nursing or leadership preferred
