Responsibilities
Monitor fetal heart rates and maternal vital signs continuously during labor to assess progress and identify any complications promptly.
Assist with labor management, including administering medications such as epidurals or analgesics, and supporting natural or assisted deliveries.
Perform thorough physical examinations and conduct assessments of maternal and fetal conditions to inform clinical decisions.
Maintain sterile technique during procedures such as suturing, catheterization, or specimen collection to prevent infection.
Collaborate with obstetricians, anesthesiologists, and neonatal teams to coordinate comprehensive care plans.
Educate patients on labor progress, postpartum care, breastfeeding techniques, and newborn care practices.
Document all patient interactions accurately within electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic or Cerner.
Manage emergency situations effectively by implementing advanced airway management, IV infusion protocols, and acute pain management strategies.
Support postpartum recovery by monitoring for complications such as hemorrhage or infection and providing appropriate interventions.
Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and maintain confidentiality of patient information at all times.
Requirements
Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license with current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
Proven experience in labor and delivery nursing within a hospital setting; Level I or Level II trauma center experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of obstetric procedures including suturing, catheterization, and sterile processing techniques.
Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems such as Epic or Cerner.
Ability to perform detailed patient assessments, interpret physiological data, and respond swiftly to emergencies.
Experience working with diverse populations including individuals with developmental disabilities or in hospice & palliative medicine is advantageous.
Knowledge of ICD coding (ICD-10), CPT coding for procedures, and infection control standards.
Excellent communication skills coupled with a compassionate approach to patient care.
Additional experience in critical care environments such as ICU or emergency medicine is highly desirable.
