UHS Hospitals Medical Surgical/Telemetry Traveler Float Pool Guidelines Working at UHS means working with a great team. What to expect when joining our traveler float pool- Staff will be asked to float between the Johnson City(33-57 Harrison St, Johnson City, NY 13790) and Binghamton hospital(10-42 Mitchell Ave, Binghamton, NY 13903) campuses. Staff will float to other Tele and Med Surg units. Nurse to patient ratios to expect 1:5-6 On occasion, staff will be asked to float to mid shift the other location if the location is in an urgent need Medical surgical/telemetry (MST) assignments will be taken in one of our 12 medical/telemetry units. Assignments are based on unit needs and are monitored throughout the day by our Staffing Office/Nursing Supervisors. At times both UHS staff and our travel nurses will be asked to float to two different units during one shift. Full charting to be completed every 8 hours – expectation is that staff will be required to do a full documentation on each unit staff are assigned to during their 12 hour shift. We realize this is not ideal, but to provide safe staffing there will be times this is needed. UHS does not have a holds/observation unit- If census is high patients may be held in our emergency departments. These patents have been admitted and are under the care of an attending physician. To care for these patients, float pool staff go to the emergency department and treat these patients as if they are on an inpatient unit. Staff are NOT taking care of emergency room patients, inpatient holds only. Staff Support- All travel staff will report to the Nurse Manager of the Clinical Resource Office (CRO). Schedules are published in four-week increments (block scheduling will be limited based on hospital needs). Schedules are available to view in Shift Wizard, the scheduling tool UHS uses. It is available on all the desktops and there is an app you may choose to download. Daily assignments come from the CRO. You will receive a text with your daily assignment, typically 1 hour before the scheduled shift. Staff are committed to living our values by showing compassion, trust, respect, teamwork and innovation to the populations we serve What to expect when joining our critical care traveler float pool Staff will be asked to float between the Johnson City(33-57 Harrison St, Johnson City, NY 13790) and Binghamton hospital(10-42 Mitchell Ave, Binghamton, NY 13903) campuses On rare occasions staff will be asked to float to mid shift the other location if the location is in an urgent need – full charting to be completed every 8 hours – expectation is that staff will be required to do a full documentation on each unit staff are assigned to during their 12-hour shift Critical care assignments will be taken in our 14 bed ICU, 16 bed CVICU, 6 bed medical ICU (Binghamton campus), 6 bed neuro and 5 bed surgical step-down suites While working in our critical care areas nurses maintain a 1:2/ 1:3 acuity based nurse to patient ratio. Stepdown ratios are 1:4 Floating Outside of Critical Care When census or acuity drops, staff may be asked to float outside of the Critical Care setting. If there is NOT an appropriate Critical Care Assignment, staff are assigned to a telemetry/medical units where a 1:4 ratio will be maintained. UHS does not have a holds/observation unit If census is high patients may be held in our emergency departments. These patents have been admitted and are under the care of an attending physician. Patients are critical care, and med/surge in nature and staff will not take greater than a 1:4 ratio. Staff are NOT taking care of emergency room patients, inpatient holds only. Staff Support All travel staff will report to the Nurse Manager of the Clinical Resource Office (CRO). Schedules are published in four week increments (block scheduling will be limited based on hospital needs). Required Qualifications
NY license in hand
BLS ACLS
must have IV experience
Tele RNs Float to other Tele,MS, Other Units and other locations as needed
ICU RNs Float to other ICU,Tele, MS, Other Units and other locations as needed
Travelers will be required to float between two campuses that are 15 mins apart
Will also be required to float to ED Holds.CLNs are NOT taking care of emergency room patients, inpatient holds only
