Instructor Job Duties
A CNA instructor must teach students what warning signs to look for in patients that may give clues to common medical conditions. An instructor may also provide basic first aid training and teach students how to take vitals, including how to take blood pressure and temperature. Knowledge of proper lifting procedures may also be part of coursework. Part of a CNA instructor’s job is shaping a curriculum for students based on guidelines identified by certification requirements established by the state that students wish to be certified in. Additional duties assigned to students may include keeping patient records and basic care duties including bathing, cleaning and hygiene.

Education and Training
A CNA instructor must be a licensed RN to practice. An associate or bachelor degree is necessary to acquire a nursing degree. Each state nursing board has different nursing requirements. Many states also require that a nurse instructor take a separate nurse assistant instructor course. Some may require one to two years’ experience in the nursing field or previous teaching experience. Many CNA instructor courses are two weeks long, but some last a full semester, depending on the school.

Key Characteristics
CNA instructors must demonstrate characteristics including patience, compassion, good problem-solving ability and commitment to students. Many courses are short term, and high turnover may be common. Students may change classes frequently. Some teaching schedules are highly changeable, although some classes are available regularly, including ones scheduled at colleges and universities, which may repeat semester after semester. A flexible attitude and the ability to work a dynamic schedule may help.
