The Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering quality general and psychiatric nursing care to patients with emotional or psychiatric disorders; serves actively and constructively as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team, supporting the organization and program philosophy of care; ensuring the safety and well-being of each patient. (FS) JOB RESPONSIBLITIES: 1. Assesses new patients within 24 hours of admission through a systematic process of interaction with the patient, their significant others or families, and the appropriate health care providers. 2. Collects and analyzes data regarding the patient’s physical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, and anticipated discharge planning needs and responds to needs assessment calls when necessary.3. Develops a comprehensive outline of care and updates master treatment plans, special programs, and problem sheets.4. Assists in developing goals and interventions; gathering relevant data and communicating it to the treatment 5. Establishes effective discharge plans, individualized and relevant to the needs of patients and significant others. 6. Maintains effective communication with all units and departments.7. Maintains designated lines of authority and supervises direct patient care as required.8. Participates in implementing and managing the therapeutic system and other applicable facets of behaviorally-oriented treatment programs.9. Implements crisis prevention and intervention procedures as required.10. Follows correct protocols for crisis management and demonstrates skills in defusing potentially combative or aggressive behaviors; distinguishes correctly between psychotic behavior and self-control problems, manipulation, or rebellious behaviors.11. Demonstrates sound knowledge of psychotropic medications and other medications commonly used with psychiatric patients.12. Ensures that orders of seclusions & restraints are promptly and correctly followed.13. Ensures that rounds and interval checks are properly made and documented and that problems are reported in a timely manner.14. Assists in the selection and orientation of qualified personnel to provide optimum patient care.15. Participates in in-service programs and takes a leadership role in maintaining therapeutic milieu.16. Provides guidelines/direction to staff regarding care required; provides structure to the units by ensuring program schedules are implemented.17. Provides feedback for 90 day and annual performance evaluations for MHS staff. 18. Assures that all psychiatric mental health standards are being met.19. Attends mandatory monthly nurse meetings. 20. Performs other duties assigned.KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: 1) Ability to perform assignments with minimal supervision;2) Ability to work successfully under highly stressful conditions;3) Ability to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles;4) Ability to collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion;5) Capability to adapt to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis;6) Effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal.7) Excellent assessment skills.8) Must have a working knowledge of computers.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITON:• Must be willing and able to execute the patient de-escalation methods, both verbal and physical.• Must be able to complete new hire requirements such as State of Alaska Background Check and Drug Testing.• Must be able to demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to age groups, as well as job and/or program specific competency within the first three (3) months of training.• Must be certified in CPR and Handle with Care Training within the first month of employment and annually thereafter.• Must complete all required mandatory in-services annually.• Must be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire; PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray tri-annually thereafter.GENERAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Working conditions for all employees are as follows, but not limited to a psychiatric hospital setting; some risk involved in the event of aggressive patient(s); work load may include day, evening, night, weekend and/or holiday shifts. Employees are occasionally exposed to blood borne pathogens, and loud noise levels. Responsible for independently applying the nursing process through the assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation of pediatric patient care. Selects and administers the appropriate care taking into consideration the age and developmental level and size of the patient. Provides a caring relationship that facilitates health and healing. Should be able to identify own limitations and seek resources as needed.
