CAMP COURAGEOUS
Job Description: Seasonal Camp Nurse(s)

JOB SUMMARY:
The seasonal nursing staff is responsible with the overall day to day operation of nursing services at Camp Courageous.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Nursing Director

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Screen all campers who are arriving and departing camp
a. Verify health history and examination
b. Conduct a physical assessment of all campers within 24 hours of their arrival at camp, documenting any health concerns such as bruises, cuts, pressure sores, infections, skin or scalp diseases. Administer appropriate first aid according to the designated protocol. Make physician referrals as needed.
c. Verify emergency authorization
d. Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable disease
2. Responsible for all medications and treatments brought to camp. Administer medications and treatments according to prescribed physician’s orders.
3. Ability to communicate with parents, program, volunteers and staff when necessary, about camper health concerns.

4. Recruit, interview, hire, and train the nursing staff as well as supervise and evaluate their quality of work. This will include completing an annual performance evaluation of those employees.
5. Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers to complete various nursing projects. Work closely with volunteers that are performing nursing related duties.
6. Accurately document all medications, treatments, or injuries of campers and staff.
7. Report and discuss any significant health treatment or concerns with the Camp Medical Doctor-Director.
8. Inform camper’s family/legal guardian about health concerns that arise while at camp.
9. Assist with camper checkout process.
10. During staff orientation train staff on all health and safety procedures, such as seizures, medications, AEDs, C-paps
11. Teach first aid and CPR/AED to all staff. Universal precautions.
12. Train program staff on their responsibilities regarding camper’s health by noting and reporting symptoms of illness, injuries, and unsafe practices or conditions that might contribute to accidents or illness. Filling out incident reports and camper physicals.
13. Responsible to prepare and maintain first aid kits and instruct camp staff in the use of the contents. Responsible for sign-out procedure for accountability.
14. Provide input regarding nutritional values of special diets and general menus served by the dietary staff.
15. Assist in developing and maintaining a nursing policy and procedure manual specific to camp’s environment and ACA rules and regulations.
16. Promote good public relations with the Camp Medical Doctor-Director and other outside medical agencies and organizations.
17. Formulate and execute a plan to offset the financial expense of the Nursing Department through educational opportunities, fund raisers, providing outside medical services, etc.
18. Provide services that generate income for camp. These may include but not be limited to, teaching classes, speaking about nursing, serving as nurse at community events, etc.
19. Obtain donations for nursing use.
20. Perform other duties as assigned by the Nursing Director in the purpose of Camp Courageous and the service it provides.

PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF THE JOB:
• Ability to lift/assist campers and staff.
• Ability to physically get to remote locations on camp property over uneven terrain quickly.
• Assess sanitation and safety conditions of the camp.
• Possess endurance to meet emergency needs.
• Ability to drive to off-camp health provider(s), physician(s), or emergency treatment locations.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
1. LPN, CNA, Advanced EMT, Registered Nurse, or higher degree.
2. Certification as an instructor in Standard First Aid, CPR, and other instructional leveled medical classes or an agreement to obtain both certifications within six months of hire date.
3. Self-motivated professional with leadership and organizational skills.
4. Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment.
5. Ability to process large quantities of work with minimal supervision and exceptional quality.
6. Outstanding public relation skills.
7. Be able to communicate effectively at all levels.
8. Be a successful team member, by demonstrating passion and dedication. Outstanding candidates are willing to assist wherever possible and often fill roles that fall outside of their area of expertise.
