Home health care is a fast growing segment of health care in the United States in which providers endeavor to enable patients to have health care needs met within their own homes as opposed to having to access services in residential, long term care or institutional settings. Medicare is the most common billing source and a multidisciplinary team consisting of nurses, home care aids, therapists and social workers is often employed. Providers visit the clients' homes to make assessments and provide a myriad of services to the consumer. Home health care agencies continue to grow in number and more and more traditional health care facilities are moving towards providing home health care. This movement has been strengthened by the Affordable Health Care for America Act which provides reimbursement for home assessments, which, in the past, were not reimbursable. There is more and more of a distinction being made between “Home Care” which is becoming known to be non-medical and “Home Health Care” which generally encompasses skilled nursing medical care. Nursing job opportunities in home health care are expected to rise steadily over the next decade.
